Hello, everyone
This game was a suggestion from a (1)_______, and I am glad it was as it is quite an interesting game. It was played in 1981 and it was the Edinburgh Club Championship, played in Edinburgh Scotland, of course, and the game is played between Geoff Chandler and Richard Kynach, both players were rated around (2) ________, I believe, as I couldn’t find any information about them, and if any of are able to find a photo of Mr. Geoff Chandler, do share in the comments so that I can update the thumbnail. Until then, Mr. Hoodie-guy will claim the glory for this game in the thumbnail. So, let’s see this game. Geoff is white and Richard has the black (3) ________.
We have e4, c6, d4 and d5. The Caro-Kann defense. E5, the advance variation, and Bishop to f5, Knight to c3, e6 and now g4. Bg6, and Nge2. Not going for h4 immediately. We have c5, Be3, Nc6, and d captures on c5. And Nxe5. And Black has here a very strong centre pawn (4) ________, White will be, well, Black is a bit better here. And White has to be pretty careful here. If he plays a move like, for example, this Knight is attacking g4, if he plays move like h3, he gets Nf3, with checkmate, so he definitely does not want to play a move like that. So, after Ne5, Mr. Chandler played Ne4, and now the Knight and the Queen are protecting f3, and also the Queen is (5) _______ g4.
We have Rook to c8, and Bb5 with check. And Nc6. And here we have the first pin of the game. Qe2, Nf6, we have a Queen-side castle by Chandler and Be7. H4. We have h5, f3, Nd7, and gxh5. And this is definitely the critical position of the game. If Black continued the game with Bxh5, everything would be perfectly ok, and Black would continue this game being better. But Mr. Kynoch (6) ______ to play Rxh5, and this is where his troubles begin.
We have Rg1. Now, well, putting the Rook on a very nice g file, also eyeing this Bishop, and if the Bishop ever moves, this g7 Pawn. So, again, probably the best idea here would be to play something like Nf8, or even Bh7 would be ok. But Mr. Kynoch played Nxd4. We have Bxd4, now (7) _____ this g7 Pawn, and we have Qc7. Black idea is that if Mr. Chandler captures this pawn on g7, he would continue with Bxc5, with the tempo on the Rook and everything should be ok. Although this would be a terrible blunder as well. But after Qc7, Chandler doesn’t really bother (8) ______ with g7 Pawn, and he plays the immediate Rxg6. A similar idea, Karpov played I his game, in his immortal game against Topolov. We have fxg6, grabbing the Rook isn’t really the best move, but, well, this position is so bad for Black that no moves are good. Fxg6 was played, and we have Qxc6, and well, what do you do here? Probably something like Kf8 comes to mind, but, again, there are really no good moves here. Mr. Kynoch tried Re5, probably with the idea of getting this Rook to be able to help the King with Rf7 and Rf8. Mr. Chandler played Nxd5 and this with the tempo on the Queen, and he is also threatening Qxe7 with (9)_________. So Qd8 is played and we have Qxc6 with check. Rf7 defending, if Kf8, this would also be a forced checkmate, a pretty simple one, with Bxg7. Kg8, Bh6+, Kh8 and Qg7 with checkmate. So, after this Qg7+, Mr. Kynoch played Rf7. We have Re1. Now pinning this Bishop on e7, and this is the third pin of the game already. We have Kf8, Qh7, now with the threat Qh8 with checkmate, so the King has to go back, Ke8, we have Qg8 with check, well, Knight can´t come to f8, as it is pinned, Bishop cant defend due to its pin from the Rook on d1, so rook to f8, we have Qxc7, capturing the Pawn, and threatening Rxe7 with check, and after the Queen recaptures, Qe7 with checkmate. So, the only move to defend this is Rf7, and now Mr. Chandler played Queen back to g8+, only move Rf8, and now we have Nf6, and this is checkmate.
And look at all these pieces defending the black (10) ______. This Knight is pinned from this Bishop. This Bishop is pinned from the Rook, this Rook cannot capture as it is pinned from the Queen. Everything is pinned, and, well, a beautiful ending by Mr. Geoff Chandler. And I really think that the quote above the board really fits the video, as the pin is truly mightier than the sword.
So yeah, that is the game, and I do hope you enjoyed it…
